You can find what you’re looking for faster by entering search words right in the address bar at the top of the Chrome window.

How searching in the address bar works

When you start typing in the address bar, Chrome will show you suggested phrases or URLs. If you’re on a computer, you might also see icons after the suggestions:

Once you click on a suggestion, Chrome opens that page for you.
Note: When you have Google set as your default search engine, Google will also look at other words on the page to give you the most relevant search results.

Tips to make searching easier

You can make your searches easier and faster by using some of the search tips below.

On your computer

  1. Highlight a word, phrase, or image and right-click it on your computer. Use control-click on a Mac.
  2. Click the option to search for it with your default search engine. For example, you might see something like "Search Google for 'emperor penguin'" or "Search Bing for this Image."
  1. Highlight a word or phrase and copy it.
  2. Right-click the address bar on your screen. For Mac, control-click the address bar.
  3. Click Paste and search.

Highlight a word or phrase and drag it to the address bar. Chrome will automatically display the search results for your highlighted text.

On a mobile device

Search by touch

You can learn more about words and phrases by touching them on your screen.
Use Search by Touch
  1. Touch any word on a webpage to highlight it.
  2. In the panel that shows up on the bottom of the page, swipe up. You’ll see search results for the words you highlighted.
  3. If this is your first time using Search by Touch, a box will open asking you if you want to allow it. Touch Allow to opt in or No thanks to opt out. You can turn it back on any time.
Turn Search by Touch on or off
You can turn Search by Touch on and off in Settings:
  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Touch the Chrome menu More.
  3. Touch Settings > Privacy > Touch to Search.
  4. Touch to the slider to turn it on or off.
Note: Google must be set as your default search engine to use Search by touch. The feature is only available on some Android devices.

Search by voice

Touch the microphone icon  above the virtual keyboard or on the New Tab page.
